Several institutions in Gentofte Kommune work with volunteers. That means they’re constantly signing up new volunteers.

E.g.:

• Ordruplund care home. Here, volunteers help by joining in with activities and visiting elderly people.
• Gentofte’s library service. Here, volunteers can help with practical tasks in connection with lectures, concerts, etc.
• Birkegården activity centre. Birkegården is an activity centre for disabled adults. Here, volunteers can join in with various activities alongside centre users. There’s also a need for hands-on work.
• Vuggestuen Elmegården nursery. Volunteers join in with children’s activities here. For example, music or theatre. You can also work hands-on, e.g. in the garden or with IT technical support.

If you’re interested in an institution, business or association, you can contact them to ask about opportunities to volunteer with them.

There are lots of good reasons to volunteer. For example, you’ll be making a difference for others, and you can expand your network. You can also use your experience and acquire new skills.

Basically,yes, you can do voluntary work if you’re on unemployment benefit or receiving social security.

You can do voluntary work if you are unemployed. However, you need to apply for voluntary work at the Job Centre (if you receive social security) or from your A-kasse (if you receive unemployment benefit). If you’re unemployed, you’ll need to be available for work at one day’s notice, even if you’re volunteering.

If you’re on sick leave, in a flexible job, etc., it’s a good idea to talk to your caseworker if you’re in any doubt.

You’re not required to speak fluent Danish if you want to volunteer. It depends on the specific agreement with your workplace. Voluntary work can be a good way to practise your Danish, too.
