To get Danish lessons at the “Speak” language school in Hellerup, you’ll need to get in touch with Gentofte Kommune. Exactly who you need to talk to depends on your circumstances.

If you’re a refugee or immigrant and receive social security, please contact your caseworker at Gentofte Kommune.

If you’re self-supporting, please contact Gentofte Job Centre. This also applies to au pairs.

Danish lessons are free if you are covered by the Integration Act. However, if you are self-supporting, you must pay a deposit for tuition.

If you’re not covered by the Integration Act, you will have to pay for your courses at the language school.

The amount of tuition you receive depends on which Danish course you will be attending. You will typically have three days a week of either daytime or evening classes. A full Danish course takes between 18 months and three years to complete.

Your child can learn Danish through his or her daycare facility or school. Nurseries, kindergartens and schools have a strong focus on enabling your children to learn and develop his or her language. This is done through language stimulation and reception classes.

Most Danes speak good English, so, if you speak English, you can easily make yourself understood and communicate with Danes. Nevertheless, being able to speak some Danish will benefit you both socially and if you are working or studying in Denmark.
