Everyone who lives in Denmark and has a Danish CPR (civil registration) number is entitled to Danish health insurance.

Health insurance provides you with free medical treatment from your GP, specialist doctors and hospitals. You can also get help with the costs of medicine, dental care, dental hygiene, physiotherapy, podiatry, chiropractic and mental health support.

The yellow health insurance card is your proof that you are entitled to health insurance. The card shows your name, CPR (civil registration) number and your GP’s contact details. You must bring your health insurance card with you when you visit your doctor, hospital or pharmacist.

You receive your health insurance card automatically when you register that you have moved house, and choose a doctor. If you lose your card, you can request a new one.

Health insurance provides an allowance towards dental visits. You are responsible for the rest of the payment.

You can choose which doctor you want as your GP. Simply choose a doctor who is within 15 km of your home and is open to new patients. You can search for doctors in your area at health.dk

You can choose whether you want to be in health insurance category 1 or 2.

In health insurance category 1, you are registered with a GP. You will need a referral from your GP for treatment from a specialist, physiotherapist, podiatrist or psychologist. In health insurance category 1, the treatment you receive from a GP or a specialist is free.

In health insurance category 2, you are not registered with any particular doctor and you do not need a referral to see a specialist, chiropractor, dentist or dental hygienist. If you are in insurance category 2, you are free to seek treatment from any GP, specialist, dentist or chiropractor. However, you will need a GP referral to see a physiotherapist, podiatrist or psychologist. You will have to pay the difference if the cost of treatment from a GP or specialist is higher than the regional subsidy.
