Children between six months and three years of age can go to a nursery, be looked after by a childminder or be cared for privately.
Nursery
In a nursery, educators and nursery assistants look after the children. A nursery provides a safe environment and care. The older children learn to be more independent, preparing them for kindergarten. Some nurseries are part of integrated institutions where a kindergarten and a nursery are operated together. Here, the child is guaranteed a place in the kindergarten upon reaching the age of 3

Childminders
A municipal childminder looks after up to four children in his/her own home. As with a nursery, childminding focuses on care, safety and development. All childminders attend a playgroup session once a week.

Private childcare
There are a number of options for private childcare:
- Private daycare facilities that meet the same requirements as municipal daycare facilities. The daycare facility is grant-maintained and supervised by Gentofte Kommune.
- Private care provision. Here, several children are cared for privately in the same way as at a daycare facility.
- An individual can care for children in his/her own home like a childminder. You can also employ an individual to look after your child in your own home.
Parents’ childminder
If you have twins or triplets, you can care for your children in your home until they are 18 months old.
