Children between six months and three years of age can go to a nursery, be looked after by a childminder or be cared for privately.

Nursery

In a nursery, educators and nursery assistants look after the children. A nursery provides a safe environment and care. The older children learn to be more independent, preparing them for kindergarten. Some nurseries are part of integrated institutions where a kindergarten and a nursery are operated together. Here, the child is guaranteed a place in the kindergarten upon reaching the age of 3

Childminders

A municipal childminder looks after up to four children in his/her own home. As with a nursery, childminding focuses on care, safety and development. All childminders attend a playgroup session once a week.

Private childcare

There are a number of options for private childcare:

• Private daycare facilities that meet the same requirements as municipal daycare facilities. The daycare facility is grant-maintained and supervised by Gentofte Kommune.
• Private care provision. Here, several children are cared for privately in the same way as at a daycare facility.
• An individual can care for children in his/her own home like a childminder. You can also employ an individual to look after your child in your own home.

Parents’ childminder

If you have twins or triplets, you can care for your children in your home until they are 18 months old.

Children between the ages of three and six can go to a kindergarten or a private daycare facility.

Kindergarten

Kindergartens are for children aged 3 to 6. Kindergartens ensure the child’s well-being and prepare the child for school. The focus is on developing children’s motor, intellectual and social skills. Some kindergartens are woodland based where the children are looked after in the woods.

Private daycare facility

A private daycare facility meets the same requirements as kindergartens. The daycare facility is grant-maintained and supervised by Gentofte Kommune.

You can view available places and reserve a place for your child using digital placement. You can reserve a place three days after your child is born. Both you and your child must have a CPR number to use the self-service solution.

If you want your child to be looked after privately, you must get in touch with the daycare facility directly.

In all daycare provision, the educational staff work to create the best conditions for children’s learning, development and well-being in a professionally attentive and caring environment. A Successful Transition From Home To Daycare

Bilingual children can receive linguistic stimulation from the age of three. Linguistic stimulation prepares children for going to a Danish school.

A language consultant assesses whether the child needs linguistic stimulation. If linguistic stimulation is needed, parents have a duty to allow their children to participate in a language assessment and linguistic stimulation.

Children who do not attend a daycare facility must have a language assessment when they are three years old. If their linguistic development is inadequate, parents have a duty to send the child to a daycare facility for 30 hours a week so that the child can receive linguistic stimulation.

Gentofte has several daycare facilities with an international profile.

Communication at these daycare facilities is in Danish and English.

Parents with income below a certain threshold can apply for a subsidised daycare place. This is known as a free daycare place. You can apply for a free daycare place via digital placement.

If you have more than one child in a daycare facility, you can apply for a sibling grant. The grant means you pay the full price for the daycare place that costs the most, and you get 50% off the other daycare places. You will receive the grant automatically when both your children are enrolled with a daycare facility or childminder.

You will also receive a grant if your child has a significant physical or mental disability. In order to receive the grant, your child’s disability must be assessed by Gentofte Kommune.

If you want to use a private daycare, you must contact a private childminder yourself. You must enter into a care agreement that relates to working conditions and conditions such as:

• monthly payment
• payment during illness
• holiday
• care times
• care place
• notice of termination.

The care agreement must state that it is a private daycare. The agreement must be approved by Gentofte Municipality before the daycare starts.

Once you have agreed on the terms of the care, you must fill out an application that must be signed by both of you and submitted to Dagtilbud (Daycare) together with the care agreement. Submit application and care agreement via Digital Post. Please write “Dagtilbud. Private daycare” in the subject line.

Grants are deposited in your NemKonto. If you do not have a NemKonto, please state your bank details in the application. The subsidy is paid when we have received documentation of your care expenses. Please use the form below.
