Whether you need to replace your licence with a Danish driving licence depends on your circumstances and where your driving licence was issued.

If you need to exchange your driving licence, you must make an appointment with Borgerservice.

The cost depends on which category of licence you require. You can ask Borgerservice about the cost.

If your physical driving licence is lost or damaged, you can obtain a duplicate licence.

You can get a duplicate licence if:

• You’ve lost your original driving licence
• Your driving licence is very worn
• You’ve changed your name
• You want a credit card-sized driving licence
• You’ve lost a foreign driving licence that was valid in Denmark.

If you will be driving outside Scandinavia and your new driving licence is not ready, you can obtain a temporary driving licence.

There are special rules about your photo for the driving licence:

• The photo must be 35 x 45 mm in size, with your head image measuring between 30–36 mm in height
• The photo must be a good likeness and taken from the front.
• The photo must show your face and the top of your shoulders.
• Your face must be evenly lit.
• You must be alone in the photo.
• The background must be light and without shadows or motifs.
• Both your eyes must be visible and you must be looking directly into the camera. If you wear glasses, make sure your eyes can be seen through your glasses.
• Your mouth must be closed.
• Your whole face must be visible. Therefore, do not wear headgear. Headgear may only be worn if it is for religious reasons, but your forehead, cheekbones and chin must be visible.

You can have your photo taken in the passport photo booth at Borgerservice. The cost is DKK 125.

You can also have your photo taken by a photographer.

You must have an international driving licence if you will be driving in a country outside the EU.

An international driving licence does not replace your Danish driving licence, but is an official translation of your Danish driving licence. The licence is valid for one year from the date of issue.

As a diplomat, you may drive in Denmark using your foreign driving licence as long as it is valid.

You must always attend Borgerservice in person to renew your driving licence.

You can avoid queuing if you make an appointment from home. You can also prepare your application and pay from home.

When you fill in and submit a digital application, you can pay by Dankort or Visa/Dankort. The money will not be deducted until you have obtained your driving licence.

At Borgerservice, you can pay by debit card, MobilePay or in cash.

If you don’t have a driving licence, you can learn to drive at a driving school. Driving schools are privately owned, and you must contact the driving school you wish to attend. You have to pay for your driving lessons and licence yourself.
