In Denmark, various services such as libraries, roads, children’s schools and the health sector are financed in part through taxes. Everyone working in Denmark is required to pay tax. The tax system is progressive, which means that the more you earn, the higher the percentage of income tax you pay. If you want to work in Denmark, you need to apply for a tax card at SKAT (the Danish Customs and Tax Administration).

A preliminary tax return is a running summary of your income and taxes for the year. It shows your expected income and deductibles, and the percentage rate of tax deducted by your employer.

The preliminary tax return arrives in November each year, and shows you SKAT’s estimate of your tax position for the year ahead. If there are any changes to your finances, you should adjust the preliminary tax return to ensure you always pay the right amount of tax.

Adjusting your preliminary tax return also adjusts your tax card, which is automatically sent to your employer, SU [student loan provider] or pension company.

The annual statement is an account of your tax for the past year. It arrives in March and shows your income and the tax you’ve paid. The annual statement also shows you whether you have overpaid or underpaid your taxes.
If you’ve overpaid, SKAT will pay you back the excess.

If you’ve underpaid, you’ll have to pay the amount of tax that’s outstanding.

All taxpayers in Denmark have a non-taxable personal allowance that’s deductible from income. You may also be entitled to other deductions, such as an allowance for mileage or for work carried out to your home.

Property tax is also known as land tax. It’s a tax that homeowners have to pay to the municipality for their land.

Once a year, you’ll be sent a property tax bill showing the amount of property tax you have to pay. The tax is payable twice a year – on 1 February and 1 August.
